“The public should be vigilant against Duterte’s Martial Law threats. We should not take them lightly. The president’s repeated threats of imposing military rule show that his authoritarian ambitions are serious,” said Anakbayan National Chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.

This is the response of the progressive youth group Anakbayan to Duterte’s latest Martial Law threat in a pre-dawn briefing with media after returning from a visit to the military regime in Thailand. “I will allow the military to try you and put you to death by hanging,” said Duterte.

“We strongly condemn these martial law threats and proposals to create military courts. Duterte is lying when he says martial law measures will solve the country’s ills. In truth, this will only worsen social injustices and human rights violations,” said Crisostomo.

The youth group pointed out that even without martial law directly declared, Duterte has already unleashed state terror and fascism against the people in the form of its anti-poor “war on drugs” that killed almost 8,000 and the all-out war against revolutionary forces that victimizes civilians and activists.

“Threatening to use force against urban poor occupying abandoned public housing, disregarding the lives of civilians as collateral damage, and giving license to the army to bomb communities and flatten the hills: Duterte is turning out to be Ferdinand Marcos 2.0,” said Crisostomo.

There have been at least 39 political killings of activists and farmers while at least 30 have been illegally arrested under Duterte. Thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes in the course of Duterte’s all-out war framed along its counterinsurgency plan Oplan Kapayapaan.

The youth group called on the Filipino youth and people to join a massive march to Mendiola against Duterte’s all-out war and fascism on March 31.
