Youth group Anakbayan in a statement condemned the violent attack by police and local government forces against Kadamay’s barricade in the Manggahan Floodway in Pasig City.

Kadamay, the progressive mass organization for the urban poor, has enjoined the residents of the East Bank Floodway, Brgy. Sta. Lucia, to defend their homes and livelihood against ongoing demolition attempts.

However, today at 3:00pm, a police assault using trucks and guns led to numerous injuries from the ranks of the residents. Reports from the field tell how the police truck was used as a battering ram against people, and how assault rifles were fired and aimed at protest leaders. The police have also detained six protesters.

“These atrocious attacks perpetrated against people mobilizing for a legitimate struggle to defend their homes and livelihood are nothing short of criminal. This latest attack is an apt demonstration of the disdain and spite the US-Duterte regime reserves against the Filipino poor,” said Anakbayan national chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.
“Instead of heeding the people’s demands, Duterte’s fascist regime bared its fangs once more against those who would resist neoliberal ‘development’ projects,” he added.

The youth leader said the urban poor have borne the brunt of violence that precede these “development” projects aimed at clearing valuable urban land for the expansion of the business activities of oligarchs.

“Demolitions are constituent of the neoliberal agenda enforced in the country to ensure the upward mobility of wealth towards the economic and political elite even as wages remain stagnant, contractualization is retained, and social welfare reversed,” said Crisostomo.

He adds that the fascist “US-Duterte regime” relies on its repressive forces to enforce its anti-people, neoliberal policies. He said the continued subservience of Duterte to the United States’ military and capitalist interests also guarantees that these atrocities will continue.

The youth group notes that cases of violent demolitions have featured prominently in the last decade alone with Paranaque’s Silverio Compound and Quezon City’s Sitio San Roque as examples. The group said these assaults, coupled with the anti-drug war, all-out war against progressive forces, and martial law in Mindanao, paves the way for the US-Duterte regime to commit further crimes against the Filipino people.

“With state-perpetrated violence and killings all over, resistance against the US-Duterte regime and the semi-feudal and semi-colonial ruling order it defends becomes a moral responsibility,” said Crisostomo.
