Youth group Anakbayan today called on the Filipino youth and people to unite to demand a stop to plans by the United States (US) military to hold airstrikes against supposed terrorist targets in the Philippines. The group said the planned US airstrikes in the country only exposes President Duterte as a puppet of US imperial interests.

“The planned US airstrikes in the Philippines fully exposes Duterte as a US puppet who has no qualms about allowing the rape of our national sovereignty and violation of the constitutional ban on foreign troops joining actual combat operations in the country,” said Anakbayan National Chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.

The youth leader said Duterte’s loud silence over current US military presence and abuses in the country belies the president’s seemingly anti-US statements denouncing the long history of US abuses in the country. He said this proves that the president’s recent raising of the Filipino people’s clamor for the return of the Balangiga Bells is an empty gesture.

“Duterte cannot claim to be in pursuit of an independent foreign policy while remaining mute on the planned US airstrikes in the country, giving a nod to the construction of US military facilities in AFP camps, and allowing the continuation of lopsided military treaties with the US,” said Crisostomo.

He added that Duterte’s loud professions of patriotism is only a cover for the his unrestrained dependence and servility to the US which he relies upon to provide bomb and weapons for his fascist and human rights violating war on drugs, genocidal anti-Moro war in Marawi, and counterinsurgency war against the communist movement.

In conclusion, Anakbayan said the US and the Duterte regime is only using the anti-terror war as a pretext for the expansion of US military presence in the country and projection of US force in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in the context of China’s rise to power and North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons capability.
