Youth group Anakbayan today joined Kadamay and other groups in a protest action at the Eastern Police District Headquarters in Pasig City to call for the immediate release of 41 residents, including 10 minors, arrested during yesterday’s violent police dispersal of the Kadamay barricade in the Manggahan Floodway in Pasig City.

The youth group strongly condemned the “unwarranted use of force” against the barricade, which led to scores of injured on the side of the protesting residents. Among the 41 arrested are 10 Anakbayan members along with the local chapter’s secretary general.

The residents of East Bank Floodway, Brgy. Sta. Lucia led by urban poor group Kadamay were holding a barricade yesterday against ongoing demolition attempts. However, the police violently attacked the protest, with a police truck used as a battering ram against the people and assault rifles fired and aimed at protest leaders.

“Around 1,000 residents who have lived in the area for over 40 years are only defending their homes and livelihood but the US-Duterte regime seeks to violently demolish and displace them to clear the way for the expansion of business activities of big oligarchs,” said Anakbayan National Chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.

The youth leader said the government is only duping residents that the area is a danger zone so they will vacate their homes of over 4 decades and make way for neoliberal commercial and residential projects that favor big business interests.

“As the US-Duterte regime enforces anti-people, neoliberal policies that trample on the people’s rights it increasingly resorts to state violence. From violent demolitions to tokhang and martial law, Duterte presides over terrorist state that has no compunction of using fascist violence against the people,” said Crisostomo.

Anakbayan is calling on the Filipino youth and people to join protests against the intensified fascist attacks and neoliberal offensives of the US-Duterte dictatorship this month which will culminate on September 21, the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law by Marcos.
