Youth group Anakbayan today hailed the resumption of the peace negotiations between the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and the Duterte government in spite of efforts by peace spoilers in the military establishment to derail the talks.

Anakbayan urged for the forging of a comprehensive agreement on socio-economic reforms (CASER) in order to clear the way for resolving the roots of the armed conflict. The group likewise called for the immediate release of all political prisoeners.

“We condemn peace spoilers Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon and Gen. Eduardo Año for doing everything they can to sabotage the peace talks and let their militarist and fascist agenda prevail,” said Anakbayan National Chairperson Vencer Crisostomo.

He said Lorenzana, Esperon, and Año are the key point persons of US imperialist interests in the country who wish to derail the peace talks to prevent fundamental socio-economic reforms, which by pushing genuine land reform and national industrialization will dismantle US hegemony in the country.

“They would rather have all-out war to give the US military arms and weapons industry a steady market for its bombs, jet fighters, and other armaments that the Armed Forces of the Philippines have gleefully targetted on civilian communities,” said Crisostomo.

Latest developments in the ongoing negotiations in Noordwijk, The Netherlands point to the signing of the CASER and the freeing of all political prisoners as beneficial for the signing of an interim joint ceasefire deal in the next rounds of talks.

Such an interim joint ceasefire deal aims to provide a more enabling environment for the implementation of the CASER and encourage the forging of a more comprehensive and stable joint ceasefire agreement between the two sides.
