President Rodrigo Duterte’s upholding of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) of 1951 in a bilateral meeting with US president Donald Trump only further reaffirms Duterte’s puppetry to US imperialism.

From actual policies upholding unequal agreements like EDCA and the MDT up to symbolic gestures like singing upon the orders of his white master Donald Trump, Duterte has completely exposed his anti-US tirades and talks of nationalism to be pure hogwash and empty rhetoric.

In truth, Duterte was only critical of the US last year when then US president Obama condemned his bloody human rights record but has now changed his tune with Trump’s endorsement of Duterte’s war on drugs, all-out counterinsurgency operations, and anti-Moro war on terror.

Under EDCA, US military facilities partly shouldered by Filipino taxpayers’ money will be built at the Edwin Andrews Air Base in Zamboanga City, Camp Bautista in Palawan, Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija, Basa Air Base in Pampanga, Lumbia Airport in Cagayan De Oro, among others

After a successful week-long series of protests that saw thousands march against Trump’s visit during the Asean Summit in Metro Manila, Anakbayan is calling for more widespread and sustained protests against Duterte’s puppetry to US imperialism, worsening fascism, and slide to direct authoritarian rule.
