Anakbayan slams P10 Metro wage hike
“No wonder the DOLE implemented this hike in time for Araw ng Patay. Walang kabuhay-buhay eh.”
This was the reaction of Anakbayan chairperson Vencer Crisostomo to news that DOLE implemented a “meager” P10 wage hike in Metro Manila today.
Crisostomo said the hike is “limos” and is far from the P125 demanded by the workers and the P993 Family Living Wage set by Ibon Foundation in 2011, the amount required to meet daily family needs.
“Ang sahod ng manggagawa ngayon ay ‘libing wage’ hindi living wage. Sa pagtaas pa lang ng pamasahe sa MRT, wala na agad ito. Idagdag pa ang pagtaas ng bilihin, serbisyo at iba pa,” he said.
Crisostomo also called the hike a “ghost hike.”
“Buti pa ang mga espirito, minsan minsan nararamdaman. Ang wage hike na ito, malabo. Most employers do not implement the minimum wage levels. It should also be noted that the Aquino government is implementing the ‘two-tiered wage system’ which effectively cut the wages and legalizes wage levels below the minimum set by law. The continuing policy of labor contractualization also legalizes lower than minimum wages,” he said.
Anakbayan is calling for the passage of P125 accross the board wage hike for workers and a stop to contractualization and two-tiered wage schemes — policies which press down workers wages.
